This three-day course provides a working knowledge of modern voice, data and video telecommunication systems. The course is designed for engineers, scientists and managers who wish to enhance their understanding of telecommunications or become familiar with major systems engineering and cost trade-offs and issues.

The course provides the analytical fundamentals and trade-off strategies of modern telecommunications signal processing. The topics are illustrated with worked examples and case studies including echo cancelers, echo suppressors, adaptive filters, FIR and IIR filters and speech processing. The integration of commercial COTS systems into military systems will be discussed.

Course Outline:

  1. Introduction to Telecommunications. Telephone network historical overview. Basic model for the communication process. Subscriber access to the telephone network. Telephone channel- Trunk transmission. Telephone switching historical perspective. Networks and Protocols-public and private. Data Networks-circuit and packet switching. Integrated Services Digital Networks (ISDN). Wireless and cellular communications. Telecommunication standards.
  2. Mathematical Framework and Models for Telecommunications and Signal Processing (TSP) Signal theory and Waveform Properties.Frequency domain representations of signals and systems. Random signals and stochastic processes. Properties of communication systems. Distortionless transmission characteristics.
  3. Principles of Voice and Data Communications. Analog Modulation/Demodulation (MODEMS) Analog/Dialog (A/D) and Digital/ Analog (D/A) converters. Sampling, quantization and encoding. Line coding and pulse shaping. Probability of detection and matched filters. Digital Modulation/Demodulation (MODEMS).
  4. Fundamentals of Digital Processing. Discrete-time signals and systems. Discrete Fourier Transform Algorithms. Z-transforms and applications. Digital filter analysis and design overview. Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) Filters. Finite Impulse Response (FIR) Filters. Digital filter structures and implementations. Finite A/D/ Quantization and wordlength effects.
  5. Digital Compression of Speech Signals. Speech generation models. Speech Coders- waveform and source. Adaptive Predicive Coding (APC). Adaptive Differential PCM (ADPCM). Channel and formant Vocoders. Linear Predictive Coding (LPC). Digital Speech Interpolation (DSI).
  6. Telephone Subscriber Loop and Echo Path Models. Echo path models. Echo Suppression (ES). Adaptive filters. Echo cancelers (EC). EC Baseband and Passband Models.

  • Dr. Charles Alexander received his B.S, M.S. and PhD in Electrical Engineering from Lowell Technological Institute, the University of New Hampshire, and the University of Maryland respectively. He was a radar design and development officer n the USAF. He worked for Harry Diamond Laboratories (US Army) as an Electrical Engineer in the research and development in radar sensor division. Since 1978 he has been employed by the Department of Defense as a Senior Electrical Engineer engaging in various teaching and research projects. Dr. Alexander is a Senior member of the IEE and has published numerous technical reports in the area of communication theory, applied signal processing and geolocation techniques.
