Amazing Video of the Planning and Work for B-29 Bombing of Japan during WW II.

This is an amazing video for World War II. The Academy Award-nominated documentary, which shows the 21st Bombing Command and its role in the B-29 bombing of Japan. This film is about 35 minutes long.  To think of 600 B-29s all taking off from 3 locations and coordinating to bomb Japan at one time to fly 3000 miles is beyond imagination.

Look at the planning and control without the computers and GPS of today. This is worth viewing for anyone working in military research and planning.

The P-51 fighter  & B29 bomber footage is remarkable. We all owe a great debt of gratitude to the Greatest Generation.

Advanced GPS course at UN Facility in Brindsisi, Italy in June 2014

Training budgets: Smaller is not an option

 

The debate on the budgets for the government organizations is pretty toxic in the US. Both US Navy and US Army alongside other organizations have declared budget shortfalls which effect many areas including training. Without commitment to training and learning new skills there can be no continuous improvement, which is one of the prime directives of any government or company.

The Applied Technology Institute (ATI) specializes in short course technical training in space, communications, defense, sonar, radar, systems engineering and signal processing. Since 1984 ATI has provided leading-edge public courses and on-site technical training to defense and NASA facilities, as well as DOD and aerospace contractors. The courses provide a clear understanding of the fundamental principles and a working knowledge of current technology and applications.

 

When your company does not want to pay for the training you really want, as an alternative, you can:

  • Spent your own personal money and funds; if you believe in it and then you will do it
  • Find a user group who are practicing the skills you desire
  • Don’t accept the classic answer from the boss, “How does X help the business?”. If the training is relevant to you achieving a goal of being a much better employee then of course it is relevant.
  • Find another organization to work for

A training manager with a good team can:

  • Fight for your team and their training; fight for your team’s budget and don’t let the senior management take it away
  • Give up your personal training for the entire year and suggest that they allocate the extra budget to training for your team members
  • Perhaps, it is time to evaluate the relationship with the preferred supplier of training. Has your firm been getting decent value from the PSL (preferred supplier list)?
  • Find alternatives to training like brown bag lunches and/or collaborate with other businesses

Everybody needs training and self-improvement.

Space Tourism and Informed Consent Laws

Spaceport America is lobbying New Mexico legislators to expand legislation to provide protection to suppliers and manufacturers of private spacecraft’s.  New Mexico already has legislation exempting operators from being sued by passengers, so long as the passenger has signed an informed consent. However, the current exemption does not apply to suppliers and manufacturers, could be liable if or when an accident occurs.

Without such protections space tourism companies, such as Virgin Galactic, may be forced to leave New Mexico for states that provide greater liability protection.  For example, Virginia  2007 legislation addressing immunity from tort claims relating to space flight broadly defined “space entity” to include not only an operator but also “any manufacturer or supplier of components, services, or vehicles that have been reviewed by” the FAA as part of issuing such a permit or license.. Va. Code. Ann. §§ 8.01-227.8 to 8.01-227.10.

However, even if New Mexico passes legislation similar Virginia’s, it is unclear if  that legislation would provided the desired protections. Discussing the proposed legislation, attorney Guigi Carminati stated: “I understand the impetus to try to match other states, but right now there is no guarantee it’s enforceable.”   There are several potential problems with immunizing legislation.  First, it is unclear whether any such state legislation would be pre-empted by federal law. Second, informed consent waivers are not always enforceable in court.  Although there is a substantial body of case law regarding when informed consent for dangerous activities is and is not enforceable, there is no case law relating to space launches.

Despite the uncertainties surrounding informed consent legislation, one thing is clear. The failure to pass a liability exemption for suppliers and manufacturers could cripple New Mexico’s commercial space industry.  Former FAA official, Patti Smith, noted that “since other states have extended the liability exemption to suppliers, New Mexico must do the same to remain competitive.” Otherwise facilities such as Space Port America, New Mexico’s recently completed $200 million commercial spaceport, may be left  deserted.

ATI’S MILITARY STANDARD 810G (MIL-STD-810G) TESTING COURSE

The course emphasizes topics you will use immediately. Suppliers to the military services protectively install commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) equipment in our flight and land vehicles and in shipboard locations where vibration and shock can be severe

This four-day class will provide education in the purpose of each test, the equipment required to perform each test, and the methodology to correctly apply the specified test environments. Vibration and Shock methods will be covered together and will include an overview of Sine and Random Vibration as well as classical waveform shock testing, drop testing and Shock Response Spectrum Testing. Instrumentation, vibration equipment, control systems and fixture design will be covered.

Each climatic test will be discussed individually, focusing on requirements, origination, equipment required, test methodology and understanding of results. Class members will participate in a tour of a lab that daily performs the full spectrum of 810G tests. Class discussion will be supported by projected visuals and video clips.

Commencing with a review of basic vibrations, we will explore vibration measurements and analysis. We’ll compare sinusoidal vs. random vibration testing systems, specifications, standards and procedures. We will emphasize vibration and shock test fixture design, fabrication, experimental evaluation and usage. We will study shock measurement, shock response spectrum (SRS) and shock testing.

Climatic testing will be looked at in great detail, emphasizing required equipment and instrumentation, correct interpretation of specifications and hints to ensure that the tests are brought to a successful conclusion. We laboratory test the protected equipment (1) to assure twenty years equipment survival and possible combat, also (2) to meet commercial test standards, IEC documents, military standards such as STANAG or MIL-STD-810G, etc.

What you will learn:

• perform vibration, shock and climatic tests

• evaluate and select equipment to perform testing

• convert field measured data into a test program,

• interpret vibration and shock test requirements and results,

• supervise vibration, shock and climatic tests,

• specify and experimentally evaluate vibration and shock test fixtures

When you visit a test lab or review a test program, you will have a good understanding of the requirements and execution of dynamics and climatics tests and so be able to ask meaningful questions and understand laboratory personnel responses.

Mr. Brenner began his career as an Environmental test engineer with Grumman Aerospace Corporation in New York, worked as design verification and reliability engineer for the Air Force, an Environmental Test Engineer for Lockheed Missiles and Space company, and spent 18 years with Kaiser Electronics in San Jose, where he managed the Environmental Test Lab and was involved with the design of hardware intended for severe environments. Mr. Brenner has been working as a consultant in the reliability testing field since 1996.

This three-day course is primarily designed for test personnel who conduct or supervise or “contract out” vibration and shock tests. It also benefits design, quality and reliability specialists who interface with vibration and shock test activities.

From this course you will obtain the ability to understand and communicate meaningfully with test personnel, perform basic engineering calculations and evaluate tradeoffs between test equipments’ and procedures.

Fundamentals of Random Vibration & Shock Testing course

Wayne Tustin has since 1995 been president of a specialized engineering school and consultancy he founded in Santa Barbara, CA. His BSEE degree is from the University of Washington, Seattle. He is a licensed Professional Engineer – Quality in the State of California. Wayne’s first encounter with vibration was at Boeing/Seattle, performing what later came to be called modal tests, on the XB-52 prototype of that highly reliable platform. Subsequently he headed field service and technical training for a manufacturer of electrodynamic shakers, before establishing another specialized school on which he left his name. Wayne has written several books and literally hundreds of articles dealing with practical aspects of vibration and shock measurement and testing.

Vibration & Noise Control course

Dr. Eric Ungar has specialized in research and consulting in vibration and noise for more than 40 years, published over 200 technical papers, and translated and revised Structure-Borne Sound. He has led short courses at the Pennsylvania State University for over 25 years and has presented numerous seminars worldwide. Dr. Ungar has served as President of the Acoustical Society of America, as President of the Institute of Noise Control Engineering, and as Chairman of the Design Engineering Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. ASME honored him with its Trent-Crede Medal in Shock and Vibration. ASA awarded him the Per Bruel Gold Medal for Noise Control and Acoustics for his work on vibrations of complex structures, structural damping, and isolation.

Dr. James Moore has, for the past twenty years, concentrated on the transmission of noise and vibration in complex structures, on improvements of noise and vibration control methods, and on the enhancement of sound quality. He has developed Statistical Energy Analysis models for the investigation of vibrations and noise complex structures as submarines, helicopters, and automobiles and has been instrumental in the acquisition of corresponding data bases. He has participated in the development of active noise control systems, noise reduction coating and signal conditioning means, as well as in the presentation of numerous short courses and industrial training programs.

Your Instructors for this Course:

Dr. Adam S. Frankel is a senior scientist with Marine Acoustics, Inc., Arlington, VA and vice-president of the Hawai’i Marine Mammal Consortium. For the past 25 years, his primary research has focused on the role of natural sounds in marine mammals and the effects of anthropogenic sounds on the marine environment, especially the impact on marine mammals. A graduate of the College of William and Mary, Dr. Frankel received his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Hawai’i at Manoa, where he studied and recorded the sounds of humpback whales. Post-doctoral work was with Cornell University’s Bioacoustics Research Program. Published research includes a recent paper on melon-headed whale vocalizations. Both scientist and educator, Frankel combines his Hawai’i – based research and acoustics expertise with teaching for Cornell University and other schools. He has advised numerous graduate students, all of whom make him proud. Frankel is a member of both the Society for the Biology of Marine Mammals and the Acoustical Society of America.

Dr. William T. Ellison is president of Marine Acoustics, Inc., Middletown, RI. Dr. Ellison has over 45 years of field and laboratory experience in underwater acoustics spanning sonar design, ASW tactics, software models and biological field studies. He is a graduate of the Naval Academy and holds the degrees of MSME and Ph.D. from MIT. He has published numerous papers in the field of acoustics and is a co-author of the 2007 monograph Marine Mammal Noise Exposure Criteria: Initial Scientific Recommendations, as well as a member of the ASA Technical Working Group on the impact of noise on Fish and Turtles. He is a Fellow of the Acoustical Society of America and a Fellow of the Explorers Club.

“Soft Skills” May Help You Get or Keep a Job

In a 2008 survey of more than 2,000 businesses in the state of Washington, employers said entry-level workers in a variety of professions were lacking in several areas, including problem solving, conflict resolution and critical observation.

You’ll likely see these “soft skills” in job descriptions, after demands for technical qualifications. Employment experts agree that tech skills may get you an interview, but these soft skills will get you the job and keep it.

Since 1984, ATI has provided leading-edge public courses and onsite technical training to DoD and NASA personnel, as well as contractors. Some of our courses cover these “soft skills” as well.

One of these “soft skills” is teamwork. Forming and leading teams is critical to becoming a successful leader. Successful leaders learn good team formation skills teamwork is a keystone of effective projects. Some of our teamwork related courses are summarized below.

ATI PROJECT DOMINANCE COURSE

This two-day course is designed for engineers, scientists and managers who work in the projects domain on complex systems. Students will learn how to build a cancellation-resistant project, how to form and lead a world-class project team and how to lead the entire effort to a successful conclusion. Cross-discipline and inter-generational techniques are taught and key topics are reinforced with small-team exercises. Attendees are given the Meyers-Briggs© assessment – many discover mismatches in temperament and assignment. All learn how to be much more effective on Project Teams.

ATI’S PROJECT MANAGEMENT OVERVIEW AND LEADERSHIP COURSE

This class is an introductory class to the Project Management discipline. It includes the basics of Project Management as well as Leadership as it pertains to Project Management. This course is intended for project managers and team leaders who need a good foundation for further study in Project Management. There are no prerequisites for this course.

ATI’S FUNDAMENTALS OF PROJECT MANAGEMENT COURSE

Today’s complex systems present difficult challenges to develop. From military systems to aircraft to environmental and electronic control systems, development teams must face the challenges with an arsenal of proven methods. Individual systems are more complex, and systems operate in much closer relationship, requiring a system-of-systems approach to the overall design.

This three-day workshop presents the fundamentals of project management approach to solving complex problems.

What you will learn:

• How to prepare a sound plan for your project and maximize your probability of success

• How to achieve Buy-In from the people who will perform the work on the project

• How to deal with conflict and also to use it to the advantage of your project

• Techniques for monitoring and controlling the outcome of your project

• Effective approaches to managing multiple projects
