Publishing is a sure route to career success — and this is the only course providing a proven methodology for turning research into publications. You’ll learn dozens of easy-to-use techniques that have enabled thousands of scientists to write up their research for prestigious journals. You’ll learn where to submit your research in order to have it accepted. You’ll learn how to leverage publishing as a career-building strategy.

Instructor

Dr. Lester Hoffman is president of LVH Success Strategies, Inc., a New York based consulting and training firm. Dr. Hoffman has helped over 2,000 scientists, engineers, doctors, and managers advance their careers by turning their research into publishable papers, articles, reports, and books. He was an editor of scientific and medical journals for six years and worked with major technical publishers like Wiley and Springer-Verlag, so Dr. Hoffman can give you his "insider’s knowledge" of what scientific journals and publishers are really looking for. Dr. Hoffman has taught this course at the U.S. Navy Undersea Warfare Center, NIH, NCI, NOAA, Census Bureau, Novartis, Martin-Marietta, and in graduate programs at the University of Maryland, Michigan State, etc. He has a PhD from Harvard and is the author of How to Write & Publish Scientific Papers.

  1. Why Publish? Benefits to your career, and how NOT publishing can damage it.

  2. What To Publish. Understanding different types of papers. Original articles, Review articles. Brief contributions. Internal Reports. White Papers. Book Reviews. Manuals & Instructional Materials. Procedures & Protocols. Books and book chapters.

  3. Where To Publish. Scientific Journals — Categories: general, discipline-wide, niche, specialized, general-interest, etc. Internal publication routes. On-line publishing channels. "Publishing" at conferences and meetings — who "needs to know" and what do they read? Publishing for "outsiders" vs for "insiders."

  4. When To Publish. Timing is critical — how to leverage your knowledge of trends, fads, and political realities — how to become a trend-watcher in order to be a trend-setter. Understanding "publication lag" and how on-line publishing is different.

  5. Who Are You Publishing For? Understanding the audience(s) you are writing for — and why you are selecting them! Differences between internal vs. external audiences — which audience can most impact your career advancement? Which are easiest to write for given your current/future research schedule and recent research accomplishments?

  6. Overcoming Obstacles to Publishing. Understanding the most common reasons why researchers don’t turn their work into published papers; how to overcome these barriers.

  7. What Are Journals Looking For. Eleven ways to find out what editors are looking for in your field. Conducting "market research" in your discipline. Correlating your research with what is of interest. How to find the "right" journal for your research.

  8. Understanding the Structure of the Basic Research Paper. The "IMRAD" Structure as your key to planning and organizing a publishable paper. Abstracts. References. Other sections of papers. How to write Introduction and Discussion sections.

  9. The Fast Way to Get A Paper Planned. The secret is in the Planning — how to plan each section of a paper so it dovetails with research activities you have to do anyway. How to use our unique Paper Planning Form. How to outline — practicing outlining a paper.

  10. The Fast Way to Get A Paper Written. The "Accelerated Writing" system that enables you to get anything written in half the time — or less. How to write a "zero draft."

  11. How to Edit Your Own Writing — Without Getting Bogged Down. Why people find it hard to edit/rewrite; how to do it quickly and easily. Making sure your don’t write too many drafts. Getting feedback before submitting. Incorporating feedback. Polishing.

  12. Ensuring You Make A Professional Submission. Using a journal’s "Instructions to Authors" to your advantage. What a "professional looking paper" is in regard to details.

  13. Communicating With A Journal. Learning to think like an editor. What they expect. How they respond to submissions. Understanding rejections and requests for changes. The peer review process.

  14. Developing Long-Term & Short-Term Publication Strategies. Creating an individualized strategy for how you will leverage publishing your work to accelerate your career.

  15. What to Bring With You. To get the fullest benefits of this workshop, please bring with notes or ideas for a research paper you’ve been wanting to write up (either research actually done or research that is current or being planned).

  16. What You Will Leave With. You will leave with: (1) an Individualized Publication Strategy to advance your career in the next year. (2) Successfully having outlined in depth at least one publishing project based on your research. (3) Selection of which journals to try to publish it in, and steps for studying them

  17. Follow-up activities. This workshop includes these follow-ups: (1) individualized feedback on one document (up to 12 pages). (2) A 1-on-1 telephone conference with Dr. Hoffman to discuss your progress. Optional follow-ups include: additional 1-on-1 coaching sessions; language coaching for any scientists who are non-native English speakers.
